Poems by Richard Finneran

Breaking the Silence

Sitting here, side by side,
without a word between us,
silence fills the air with uncertainty
and awkwardness echoes

We make only the slightest movements,
afraid of a squeak or a crack,
a wall of quiet divides us.

Now our fears pollute the air
and distrust hushes our smiles.

     But somewhere
     amid the silent dark,
     a little spark pops here,
     then there, unheard
     but felt instead.

So you turn your head
and I turn mine
and we touch and break the silence.
