Prayer to a Laughing God

Perhaps I'll die a father,
   who raised children in good health,
or maybe die a worker,
   who procured his boss great wealth,
or even die a soldier,
   who loved country more than self,
but Lord, let me die a poet,
   with his book upon the shelf.
