To a friend on her twenty-first birthday What, Shannon, can a flower say
that words can't say as well?
Do dafodils communicate
a feeling by their smell?
Can lilies give you comforting
when days have been too long,
or orchids offer counsel when
a friend has done you wrong?
Will daisies spur your confidence
when dealing with your doubts,
or tulips make your lips curl when
they only want to pout?
What rose could hope to recognize
your kindness or your grace,
or what gardenia glorify
the beauty of your face?
So, though these words are adequate
to celebrate this day,
you must forgive the senselessness
of sending this bouqet.
